What Is a Rapid HIV Test?

The rapid HIV test is an antibody test and like other HIV antibody tests, it could involve 2 steps. The first step usually takes between 10 and 20 minutes to run. If it is non-reactive, the second step does not need to be done and the final result is negative.

If the rapid test reacts, a second step or confirmatory test will be done. The second step usually will be a blood test and will take about 1 week for results to be ready. As with other HIV tests, it is possible to react on the first step and not be infected. The final test result is not HIV positive unless both steps are reactive.

How Accurate Is the Rapid HIV Test?

The accuracy of the Rapid HIV test is similar to the first step testing of other HIV antibody tests. If it is reactive, a confirmatory or second step test needs to be done. As with other antibody tests, if there is recent risk it is possible antibodies are not detectable yet and testing will need to be repeated in 3 months.

How Is the Test Done?

The test is performed on blood collected from a finger stick.

How Fast Are Results Ready?

PHMDC uses a test that must be read between 15 and 20 minutes after it starts. People getting the rapid test should expect to spend 30 to 45 minutes in the clinic. If the confirmatory test is needed, the final result usually takes 3 to 4 business days but may take up to 1 week.

Does the Rapid Test Show a Recent Infection?

"Rapid" testing does not refer to detecting recent infections. The window period, when antibodies are undetectable, is similar to other HIV tests. Most people will have detectable HIV antibodies by 12 weeks after an exposure. If you have concerns about very recent high - risk exposure, call (608) 243 - 0411 during business hours for more information.

Where Can I Get a Rapid Test?

Rapid testing is available at all of PHMDC test sites. AIDS Network, Blue Bus Clinic and Planned Parenthood also offer rapid HIV testing. Most private clinics and doctor's offices do not have the rapid test.
