What Is a Rapid HIV Test?
The rapid HIV test is an antibody test and like other HIV antibody tests, it could involve 2 steps. The first step usually takes between 10 and 20 minutes to run. If it is non-reactive, the second step does not need to be done and the final result is negative.
If the rapid test reacts, a second step or confirmatory test will be done. The second step usually will be a blood test and will take about 1 week for results to be ready. As with other HIV tests, it is possible to react on the first step and not be infected. The final test result is not HIV positive unless both steps are reactive.
