City of Madison Dog & Cat Owners

All City of Madison residents owning a dog or cat that is 5 months of age or older must have their pet licensed. The license year is January 1 through December 31.

Procedure for Dog/Cat Licensing

Dane County Dog Owners

All Dane County residents owning a dog that is 5 months of age or older must have their pet licensed. The license year is January 1 through December 31.

County Licenses are sold by individual Town, City and Village Clerks.

To obtain a County dog license find out who your clerk is and request a dog license application.

Owners will need to provide:

  • Proof of current rabies vaccination.
  • Proof of spaying or neutering if applicable.

Remember dog licenses must be obtained on a yearly basis.

Dane County Cat Owners

Cats do not need to be licensed in rural Dane County but some Municipalities may have stricter ordinances. Check with the Municipality in which you live to see if there are pet laws not covered by County Ordinance.
