Breastfeeding Education and Support Services

PHMDC has public health nurses and nutritionists who are certified lactation consultants. It offers the following services to promote and support breastfeeding:

Breastfeeding Classes & Individual Breastfeeding Consultation

Through classes and individual consultation, breastfeeding specialists provide support and information, both before and after delivery. Information is provided on how to:

  • Help breastfeeding to go well right from the birth of the baby.
  • Get past the difficulties that can happen in the early weeks.
  • Continue giving baby breastmilk while away for work or school.

Peer Mentors

WIC participants who are pregnant or breastfeeding may receive support from a breastfeeding Peer Mentor. These women from the community are experienced breastfeeding moms who have had special training. They are friendly, knowledgeable and caring people who will offer encouragement, support and information.

Breast Pump Program

Mothers with medical assistance need to get pumps from their health care provider. Mothers who are on WIC and do not have medical assistance may be eligible for a pump from public health.
