Madison Beaches Now Open
Testing Indicates Waters are Safe for Swimming & Aquatic Activities
Madison WI - June 18, 2008 - The Public Health -Madison and Dane County Laboratory is happy to announce that all Madison beaches are open. The beaches had been closed due to the release of sewage into Lakes Mendota and Monona and to heavy rain-driven runoff. Some beaches were at, or exceeded 2400 colonies of E.coli per 100 milliliters (indicative of the presence of disease causing organisms) after the flooding conditions subsided. Public Health closes beaches when levels above 1000 ppm are detected. Now, based on frequent sampling and testing, all beaches are well below the danger zone and water quality is now normal. This will be welcome news for those citizens who have been patiently waiting for a go ahead to enjoy aquatic recreation during this period of excellent weather.
