Dog Owners Reminded of Madison Rules

Being Safe and Legal is Good for your Dog and your Neighbors
Madison WI - Tuesday, May 27, 2008 - With the onset of summer weather, many dog owners will be spending more time outdoors with their pets. According to Patrick Comfert of the Animal Services Section of Public Health for Madison and Dane County, "The Madison ordinance on pets provide some very sensible rules that are good for both your dog and your community."
These rules include:
- always keep your dog leashed when off your property
- the city has a number of off-leash exercise areas in parks where dogs are allowed
- a list of these areas can be found at www.cityofmadison.com/parks.
- Do not allow your dog to trespass on public or private property and never allow your dog on
- school grounds,
- beaches or
- public cemeteries.
- Always carry equipment sufficient to clean up your dog's feces whenever you and your dog are off your property.
- Don't let feces accumulate on your property and do not allow your dog to defecate on any property other than your own unless you immediately remove and properly dispose of the waste.
- Do not confine your dog in a vehicle in extreme hot or cold weather
- On a warm day, the temperature in a parked car can reach 160 degrees in a matter of minutes, even with partially opened windows.
- With only hot air to breathe, you pet can quickly suffer brain damage or die from heatstroke.
- On hot days, your pet is safer at home!
- Provide your dog with adequate shelter if kept outside for extended periods.
- Provide shelter from sun, wind, and precipitation whenever your dog is kept outside.
- Be sure your dog's kennel, collar and leash are in sound condition.
- Remember to keep your pet's rabies vaccination and license current.
- dogs and cats are required to wear rabies, license and owner ID tags.
- Obtain and display a Park Permit anytime your dog is in a park where dogs are allowed.
