Clean Sweep Household Hazardous Waste Site 2012 Summer Hours Start on Tuesday May 1st

Do you have a few boxes of old pesticides or paint thinners that have been sitting in your garage for a long time? If your spring cleaning chores include getting rid of these items, bring them to Clean Sweep. The Clean Sweep Program for recycling household hazardous waste will start its 2012 summer hours on Tuesday, May 1st, 2012. "Clean Sweep is a popular program that helps keep hazardous materials out of our environment and extends the life of our landfill," said Dane County Executive Joe Parisi. "And the county is looking forward to breaking ground this summer on a facility that will enable Clean Sweep to operate year round, making it even more convenient for citizens." Madison Mayor Paul Soglin added, "Clean Sweep provides a great opportunity to not only assist with spring cleaning but to keep hazardous material out of our landfills. As we celebrate Earth Day this weekend this reminder is even more timely." • Summer hours of operation are on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. • The site is located on 2302 Fish Hatchery Road in Madison, on the corner of Fish Hatchery and Badger Roads, behind the Dane County Highway Garage Building on the north end of the property. o Due to a redesign/reconstruction of Fish Hatchery Road, please use the Badger Road entrance. • The last day of the summer season will be Saturday, October 31st 2012. • Leaving materials at the site when it is closed is illegal and can lead to a $2000 fine. The Clean Sweep Program provides an opportunity for residents of Dane County to safely dispose of household hazardous materials, free of charge. The Product Exchange offers high quality and usable products brought to Clean Sweep by members of the public and offered free of charge. The Small Business Collection Program accepts materials from small businesses and local units of government. These materials are accepted by appointment only Tuesday through Saturday mornings throughout the year. Prior arrangements need to be made before bringing materials to the site, and there is a per pound charge for materials brought to the site. Business owners are reminded that they need to allow enough time to request registration materials and to submit an inventory of the materials for recycling. Registration is available on our web site at www.danecountycleansweep.com or by calling Dave Radisewitz, the Clean Sweep Coordinator, at (608) 243-0347. Clean Sweep will also accept agriculturally-generated wastes. A Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection grant underwrites the disposal costs so there is no cost to farmers, and agricultural businesses only pay half the normal business rate. All farmers and agricultural-related businesses from Dane County are invited to participate. Agricultural Clean Sweep Program participation is by appointment only, Tuesday through Saturday mornings throughout the year.
